The Worcesters going into Action

These soldiers seem so happy that I think that in fact they’re going in the rear lines, but it’s still a very cute picture…It was published by the Daily Mail in its Battle Pictures series.

You may have noticed that a soldier holds a gigantic hammer. Such weapons remind me the ones used by orcs in Warhammer, does one of my reader know their use during the Great War?

  1. Such a heavy wooden maul would typically be used in civilian work to drive timber framing or circus tent pegs, but in the army it was probably used to set barbed wire stakes or telephone cable poles. Or it may have been for spikes to secure the base of machine guns or artillery.
