The Major

At least I suppose this is a major of the US Army, because of the leaf on his overseas cap. If I get it right, the leaf is supposed to be in gold for major rank and in silver for lieutenant colonel rank. Does anyone confirm? He also wears a chevron for 6 months of service overseas, as indicated on his left sleeve.

  1. That is correct, the insignia for Major is a gold oak leaf while the next rank, Lieutenant Colonel is in silver. The white tone on this officers badge looks more silver than brass, so I think he is a Lieutenant Colonel. This is another fine portrait too. I always keep an eye out for that wonderful backdrop whenever I find a postcard of a US soldier from 1918.
