A band on donkeys

As I’ve decided to launch a very informal series of posts about animals during the Great War, here’s a nice picture taken in November 1918 ar Richon in Syria. It shows the band of the Anzac Mounted Division riding donkeys instead of horses…

  1. I’m not sure which is the silliest thing about this photo. That the bandsmen are on donkeys or that the two drummers are on foot! Mounted military bands were still a common army unit found on all sides during the war, but donkeys, notwithstanding their practical qualities in the Middle East, were not the typical animal for cavalry regiments to use. Do you think they rode them into Damascus?
