The post

I’ve hardly published any post about this topic, but it’s a major element of soldiers’ life during the Great War: the post (as illustrated by this pic of German soldiers in September 1917). I am currently reading Fabio Caffarena’s Lettere della Grande Guerra; the author states on page 40 that about 4 billions of letters were exchanged between the front and the rest of the country in Italy during the war. This amount raised to 10 billions for France and an amazing 30 billions for Germany!

  1. Those are astonishing numbers! It explains why there are so many 1914-18 postcards for sale. I like horses and have recently acquired a few photo postcards of German mail wagons. Next to food (and beer) the army postal service was the most important thing in a soldier’s life.
