As you probably know, after Caporetto’s defeat, Italian troops had to retreat to the Piave river. This river became soon the symbol of the Italian resistance, as shown by this postcard. Its caption states “The life and the honor of our country is decided by the Piave river: ITALIAN SOLDIER, here you’ll win or die!”
This postcard was a “franchigia”, i.e. a special postcard for Italian troops (which could be sent without paying any stamp. To be more precise, it was published for the III Armata, the Army of the Duca d’Aosta.
