War Dogs

Women (see my yesterday’s post) were not the only “strange” auxiliaries of Italian Army during the Great War. On the Italian front (in the Carso region, but especially in the Adamello mountains), these dogs were used with special sledges to carry equipment, food, guns and even wounded men. The dogs on this picture are carrying special bags, maybe to carry messages from one shelter to another.

  1. Working dogs were part of everyday life throughout Europe at this time, but I’ve never seen how the mountain dog breeds were used. Have you seen the postcards of Belgian dogs that were hitched to small machine gun wagons?
