The Farrier

Twice a year, I spend a day at the Militalia Fair in Milan and buy some WW1 material, included photograhs bought to a German dealer, that’s why this post and the next ones are mainly dedicated to German Army! Let’s start this series with this picture of a group of soldiers, the most interesting is the man on the left: his apron and the pliers he holds in his hand make me think he’s a farrier.

  1. A farrier’s apron usually has split leggings so the farrier can hold a horse’s hoof between his knees. I think he might be a joiner or woodworker who built the fine doorway behind them. The small bottle of flowers in front adds a nice domestic touch as if they planned to stay there for a while.
