This was on October 24th, 1917. Austrian troops, with the support of German units, were able to break into the Italian front line and rout the Italian army, which had practically no mobile reserves. Italian units had to go back behind Piave River where they could establish a new defensive line. I’ve chosen as an illustration a picture published in Italian La Domenica del Corriere, which was published on Sundays.
