Sir Edward Grey’s speech

This speech made in the British House of Commons by Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey on 3 August 1914 inspired Parliament to commit the nation to war in Continental Europe.

The drawing is made by the Italian artist Cyrus Cincinato (‘Ciro’) Cuneo, born in San Francisco in 1879. This prolific artist transitioned to war artist work with the outbreak of the First World War, until his death in 1916.
