The typewriter

I love old typewriters and I couldn’t miss this picture! This photograph was taken in Strasbourg in April 1919, i.e. about 6 months after the liberation of the alsatian town by French troops at the end of the war. The caption on its back, written by the photographied soldier, informs that he was very busy writing a 4 page letter to… his mother.

  1. This is my new favorite photo on your blog! What mother wouldn’t wish to see her son with a typewriter instead of a gun? To a soldier behind the lines the clattering keys of typewriters was a sound just as familiar as the noise of machine guns and bombs.
