The sinking of RMS Lusitania

Exactly 99 years ago today, RMS Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-Boat, 11 mi (18 km) off the southern coast of Ireland and inside the declared “zone of war”. She was sent to the bottom in 18 minutes, claiming the lives of 1198 people.

The sinking caused an international outcry, especially in Britain and across the British Empire, as well as in the United States and in France, as shown by this drawing made by Poulbot.
