A Four-shot Gun

According to the caption of this picture, this soldier is about to shoot 4 grenades in one go. These rifle grenades cannot be seen on this picture, but I presume they are Vivien-Bessière ones. Such grenades were developed during the early part of 1916 by Engineer Captains Jean Vivien and Gustave Bessière, which created a slip-on launching cup, called “Tromblon”, made of a block of hardened steel, that had a 50mm (2 inch) bore that was joined to the rifle barrel at the muzzle by a tapered hollow cone. The grenade itself was fired out of the launcher by means of a regulation ball service cartridge and not by a special blank cartridge as had been the case with other grenade launchers in service with the other armies.
