The preparation of barbed wire

I am in some way fascinated by barbed wire and its use during the Great War (I am even the author of an article on this subject published on the BAR International Series). Therefore, how could I miss this picture of French soldiers preparing barbed wire for the front line?

  1. I have read several books on the Great War that describe how this seemingly simple war material was one of the major influences that changed the conduct of warfare in WW1. I know that countless miles were strung over every battlefront, but I’ve never read about the cleanup after the war. What happened to all this steel wire after 1918? Was it re-cycled into material for WW2?
