This photograph, taken on March 3, 1917 was probably taken near the front line, as one can notice some bullet holes on the wall behind this Italian soldier, who wears an overcoat with a fur collar. But the legend on the reverse gives us interesting additional information, as it states “Presso i ruderi di mia villa di Peteano. Alla cara cugina Pina” (The ruins of my villa in Peteano. To my dear cousin Pina). Peteano is located near Gorizia, whih was indeed on the front line. This oldier was probably the landlord (or more probably his son) of this destroyed villa, if this legend isn’t ironic.
