The M1879 Other Ranks’ Jacket

Another French uniform for today! This model of jacket was nicknamed “ras-de-cul” (bare arse) because of its very short cut. This kind of spencer was fastened by 9 small tombac buttons embossed with a grenade. The man portrayed on this picture is probably a regimental medic, as indicated by the international red cross symbol on his left sleeve.

  1. The soldier’s cigarette makes it very French. I’m curious about the shoes as this man has similar buckles or buttons as the soldier in yesterday’s photo. Are they shoes with a French version of the puttee or proper boots? Coats and shoes are good clues for identification and dating old photos.
